Shai Hills Resource Reserve lies roughly an hour’s drive from central Accra, traffic permitting, along the Tema to Akosombo road. Rocky hills rise from grassland and dry forest, and troops of baboons are the reserve’s most visible residents.
Visitors usually see baboons close to the road and trails, along with antelope and birdlife, though sightings vary. Go early in the day, when animals are most active and the heat is mild, and take a ranger guide for the best chance of wildlife and the hill trails.
Good to know: Baboons are wild and can be bold around food. Keep snacks out of sight, do not feed them and keep bags zipped.
