Southern Africa Travel Guide
Cape Town, Kruger’s big-game safaris, and Namibia’s deserts — a different landscape and pace from East Africa.
Cape Town & Kruger
Cape Town pairs Table Mountain, beaches and the Winelands in one city break, while Kruger National Park offers reliable Big Five safari, including self-drive options rare elsewhere on the continent. Johannesburg serves as the main international gateway.
Wilder, less crowded safari
Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Namibia’s Namib Desert (home to the towering red dunes at Sossusvlei) offer a lower-density, higher-cost safari style compared to East Africa — fewer vehicles per sighting, more remote camps.
Visa & entry
Requirements vary by nationality — South Africa, Botswana and Namibia offer visa-free entry to many nationalities for short tourist stays, others need a visa in advance. Confirm current rules with each country’s immigration authority before booking.
Currency
South Africa uses the rand, Namibia the Namibian dollar (pegged to the rand and often interchangeable), and Botswana the pula. Cards are widely accepted in cities and lodges across all three.
