East Africa

Tanzania Travel Guide

The Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar’s beaches — Kenya’s neighbor and a natural extension for a longer East Africa trip.

Safari

The Serengeti & Ngorongoro

The Serengeti forms one continuous ecosystem with Kenya’s Maasai Mara — the same wildebeest migration moves between the two throughout the year, generally in the Serengeti from December to June and the Mara from July to October. The Ngorongoro Crater, a short drive away, offers unusually dense wildlife in a contained volcanic caldera.

Kilimanjaro & Zanzibar

Beyond the plains

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, draws climbers on multi-day treks up several established routes. Zanzibar’s beaches and Stone Town offer a natural add-on for travelers who want to end a safari with time on the Indian Ocean.

Combining with Kenya

A Kenya–Tanzania itinerary

Because the Mara and Serengeti connect directly, some travelers cross overland between the two parks as part of one safari, though most itineraries fly Nairobi to Tanzania’s northern circuit separately, since border-crossing logistics between parks can be slow.

Before you go

Visa & currency

Many nationalities can get a Tanzania e-visa or visa-on-arrival — confirm current requirements with Tanzania’s immigration authority before booking. Tanzania uses the Tanzanian shilling; US dollars are widely accepted for park fees, lodges and tours, but carry local currency for everyday purchases.
