Elephants & Kilimanjaro views
Amboseli is best known for large, easily observed elephant herds set against Mount Kilimanjaro, which sits just across the border in Tanzania. Clearest views of the mountain are typically in the early morning before clouds build up later in the day.
Best time to visit
The dry seasons (June–October and January–February) bring wildlife closer to the park’s swamps and offer the clearest Kilimanjaro views. The park is smaller than the Maasai Mara, so game viewing stays reliable even outside peak months.
From Nairobi
Amboseli is one of the closest major parks to Nairobi — around a four-hour drive, or a short scheduled flight from Wilson Airport, which makes it a realistic option even on a shorter trip.
Pairing with the Mara
Because Amboseli is close to Nairobi, some travelers combine it with the Maasai Mara for two contrasting safari experiences — the Mara’s open plains and migration versus Amboseli’s elephants and mountain backdrop.
